“Bell’Italia 2019” Calendar – Rocca d’Anfo

Monumental and majestic, the Rocca d’Anfo rises above Lake Idro in a strategic position between the shore and surrounding mountains. A location that was not randomly chosen and with a glorious past: the Rocca d’Anfo was in fact built on what was then the border between the Republic of Venice and Episcopal principality of Trento as a safeguard point of the State, in a natural context that is still today one of most exceptional in Northern Italy.

Having performed various functions over the centuries and then fallen into disuse, in 2005 a recovery program was started which has led to the partial reopening to the public. An extraordinary joint effort between institutions and administrations that today gives us the possibility of venturing into this incredible trench, making a journey that goes back in time over five centuries.

The Rocca d’Anfo tours are organised in spring and summer. Visitors can chose from two itineraries, one with a duration of approximately 4 hours and a shorter one that lasts approximately 2 and a half hours. Mountain attire, a torch and water is recommended.

Between history and nature

Construction of the Rocca d’Anfo dates back to the 15th century. Built for defensive purposes, it was renovated several times. Following the creation of the Kingdom of Italy, its defensive role came to an end and it was adapted to several uses, from a barracks for the training of soldiers in the use of gun powder to a place of detention. Total closure dates back to 1975.

The fortress stands out in all its surprising magnificence on an area of 50 hectares that spreads out from the lake waters to the observatory. During the guided tours, visitors are guided through underground passages and ancient tunnels to discover walls, batteries, towers, barracks, to relive the history of the fortress with thrilling stories and unforgettable views.

The route offers the opportunity to sample a mix of styles and influences that shaped the history of this lake, from the Venetian area to the barracks of the Napoleonic era. The stairs leading to the panoramic Belvedere viewing point are of particular importance; here you can admire a breath taking view. The tour ends with a very interesting museum set up by a group of volunteers.
