Given the significant interest shown in the previous article that dealt with the shabby chic style, we decided to cover the topic once more, focusing on the furnishing of one of the most important rooms in the house: the living room.
The living room is where we receive guests and spend most of our day, perhaps watching the television or flipping through a newspaper, for this reason it must be a comfortable and familiar environment. The shabby chic style helps us with its light and bright colours and its pleasant natural fabrics.
Let’s start with the colour of the walls, which should be light to diffuse the light in the environment. Paintings will then be hung on the walls in different sizes and materials; from the square or rectangular format to the more classic oval format, the important thing is that all the frames are decorated and possibly white. If you don’t have any subjects to frame, you can always create something very original by simply hanging plaster frames without glass, allowing you to see the wall.
The sofa should have soft shapes and be light grey in colour or a light shade of beige, preferably in natural fabrics such as linen and cotton; cushions in different shapes and fabrics (always natural) should then be placed on the sofa, to create movement in the room and convey a pleasant sense of comfort.
An armchair can be placed next to the sofa with sinuous forms and elaborate feet, naturally made of wood and covered with material (not leather). The armchair must have a different style from the sofa so that the room is not monotonous.
In front of the sofa, we’ll place a low table, made strictly of white wood. If you want to lighten the atmosphere then choose a table with a white frame and a glass top, otherwise, you can opt for a table made entirely of wood. A ceramic vase on top of the table is obligatory with some pink peonies, while small ornaments can be placed on a small doily, obviously this must be handmade.
On the other hand, if you decide to position the table to the side of the sofa you can place a table lamp on it, strictly in line with the shabby chic style. Choose a lamp with soft shapes, made of porcelain and with a clear shade, perhaps enriched with a “ton sur ton” motif.
Against one of the living room walls, we will find an old sideboard, again in wood, the drawers embellished with vintage style handles or knobs (such as the Sirena knob in aged brass, perfect for the shabby chic style). If you can, try and find an authentic sideboard. It doesn’t matter if it’s not in perfect shape, that will make the whole effect more authentic.
Some blown glass vases should then be placed on top of the sideboard and one or more candelabras are a must (ideally in brass or ceramic with several arms) and stick to white candles (definitely no coloured candles!).
If you want to create atmosphere you could use large lanterns with wax candles inside (no electric ones). These lanterns should then be placed around the room to create pleasant points of light and they should be visible regardless of the position in which one is located.
The curtains, on the other hand, must be linen or heavy cotton and should be supported by wrought iron poles (ideally these should also be painted white) with ornamental finials. The curtains can be fixed with sliding rings or through the slots in the curtain itself.
The lighting fixture should certainly be of importance, ideally in wrought iron with crystal pendants, to make the room pleasantly refined and exclusive. Be careful when choosing the colour temperature of the bulbs, which must be between 2,700° and 3,000°. If you’re considering using LED bulbs do not purchase them in the supermarket as they often have a low brightness and poor colour rendering, go to a specialized lighting shop instead.
If the living room is not very big you could consider adding a mirror; this should be large with a very important frame, naturally white in colour, and it should be positioned in such a way as to “deceive the eye” and give a sensation of greater airiness to the room.
Finally, have fun with the accessories. Some photo frames, an old wall clock, a leather coin tray, any object from the past can be an excellent furnishing accessory that will further characterize your room.
