A small pearl embraced by the surrounding hills, Spello is a must-see for those travelling to discover the beauties of Umbria. Located on the spur of Monte Subasio, Spello is an ancient village with a medieval flavour with an unusual peculiarity: the buildings are made with the pink limestone of the mountain. This feature gives them an unusual visual impact, especially at sunset, when the whole town is transformed into a splendid warm and sunny picturesque image.
Spello proudly exhibits many monuments and places of interest: the medieval gates, the remains of the amphitheatre, the old town walls, the Pinacoteca, the buildings, the Churches. But there is an event that more than any other draws thousands of visitors: the famous Infiorate di Spello, an event that coincides with the feast of Corpus Domini. An event not to be missed where processions are held along the streets of the old town creating a triumph of magnificent and colourful scenes, made with fresh flowers.
History and art
Listed in the ranking of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy, the Municipality of Spello is located in a strategic position between Assisi and Foligno, making it a favourite destination since ancient times for pilgrimages and visits by famous people. Walking through the streets you will discover all the rich testimonies of this jewel, in a journey that takes you back in time. From the ancient Roman villa with its wonderful floor mosaics to the gardens of the park of Villa Fidelia, from the Town Hall to the entrance gates to the village up to the city walls, every corner of Spello is ready to amaze you in a combination of eras and styles.
Many artists have left their mark in Spello: one above all is Pinturicchio, one of the greatest exponents of the Umbrian and Italian Renaissance, author of the fresco in the Baglioni Chapel of the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore and of the panel of Madonna and Saints (1508) preserved in the thirteenth century Church of Sant’Andrea.
To end your visit to the village in the best way, we suggest going as far as Belvedere, an ancient terrace on which the Roman forum was built. A special and romantic place where you can enjoy.
