When form meets hand: the hidden comfort of handles.

When choosing a handle, we are often attracted by the form, style or finish. One fundamental aspect is often overlooked: comfort to the touch and safety of the gesture.

After all, opening a door is an action we repeat dozens and dozens of time every day. At home, at work, and in public places. And it is precisely the fact that it is a daily task that makes it an important gesture, which should be natural, intuitive, almost reassuring.

Not all handles meet these requirements.  A shape that is too angular, a handgrip that it too thin or slick, a lever that is too short: these are small details that over time can make the gesture unpleasant and unsafe.

That’s why choosing a comfortable and well-proportioned handle is essential, especially in environments shared by several people, such as public spaces with frequent flows of people.

How to choose a comfortable handle? A CHECK-LIST TO KEEP IN MIND.

  1. Rounded corners. They prevent children or distracted people from accidentally bumping into them and hurting themselves. Regardless of the design, classic or modern, handles with rounded profiles are much safer.
  2. Ergonomic shapes. It is preferable that the handgrip follows the shape of the hand, accompanying it in the gesture. Shapes that are too angular create discontinuity and can be uncomfortable.
  3. Proportionate dimensions. A handle that is too small does not provide safety. The correct proportion between the handgrip, neck and rose is fundamental to convey balance and comfort.
  4. Soft-touch finish. A new feature in recent years, painted handles, such as those in matt black or white, they are softer to the touch. This is because the numerous layers of paint create a velvety texture, pleasant to caress, that we could even define as “warmer” as compared with bare metal.
  5. Solidity of the material. Brass, compared to other materials, has a more “full-bodied” feel, it provides an idea of solidity that makes the gesture more decided and safe.
